Someone once told me that other than saying goodbye to a family member who you currently shared a house with, that losing a pet is the hardest loss, even harder than a relative who you didn’t live with. The reason is that pets are always home. So it’s impossible to be home, once they are gone, without noticing their absence. There is the walk in the morning, at night, the feeding. You could lose a dear friend who you spoke with every week and yet, their loss would not be so obvious to you from the moment you get up in the morning, to the last thing at night.

That being said, over time, the ache does grow less and the strong good memories continue.

Sometimes going away yourself for a few days can be a welcome distraction. Good luck with your grieving. Be patient with yourself and also with those who have never loved a dog with all their heart and therefore won’t get it.
