I have stories that have more claps than reads and I have NOT promoted in Facebook groups or sent links to friends. Personally, I'm suspicious of a flaw in Medium's algorithms for counting READS. I'm trying to not let it discourage me, but it's a bit of a challenge.

If people are clapping, but not counted as having read my story, what's up with that, right?
