Happiness is A Warm Puppy, a love letter to Lucy, no, not THAT Lucy
We bought a female yellow Labrador puppy in early August and named her Lucy.
She is wiggly and warm, full of fire and fun and now at almost 6 months old, her size is more small dog and less puppy-size. Every time I pick her up, I can’t help but think of the statement that “Happiness is a warm puppy.”
It’s a line that Charles Schultz had Lucy say after giving Snoopy a hug
Boy did Schulz get it right. Puppies are warm, soft, loving and enthusiastic. Even when I put Lucy down, even when she is ‘displeasing me’ on one level, she can make me smile. For example, Lucy might grab a garden glove and run outside and then abandoned it in the leaves. The energy in her every move as she makes the snatch, shakes her head and tosses said glove in the air make me smile even as part of me resists and knows I’ll never find a matched pair of gloves when gardening season returns.
My husband commented as Lucy bounded across the floor with some household object, “Everything is a toy when it is all brand-new.”
Puppies play almost non-stop. Actually I believe they only stop playing to sleep or chew (if you don’t count chewing as play).
Hug a puppy and you will be filled with good feelings. It is a simple truth.

Or read, Can Pets Make You Happy? or Find happiness with a pet. Now there are SOME who think that that ‘Happiness is a warm puppy’ is meant to indicate that happiness comes from simple pleasures. They might think I’m interpreting the comment too literally. But they never met Lucy.
I love you, Lucy.
